A Legacy of Leadership

The Heart of the Okavango, Preserved by Its People

At the centre of the Okavango Delta lies a place rich in both wildlife and legacy.

Moremi Game Reserve is Africa's first wildlife reserve to be established by a local community. In 1963, the Batawana people of Ngamiland — led by the visionary widow of Chief Moremi III, Mrs. Moremi — responded to the threat of overhunting and habitat loss by protecting their ancestral land. The result was a powerful act of conservation leadership, and the only officially protected area within the Delta.

A Mosaic of Ecosystems

Where land and water merge to create something extraordinary

Covering around 3,900 square kilometres, Moremi is a blend of habitats that shift with the seasons — and with the flood.

Floodplains

Seasonal and permanent floodplains that draw immense herds as the Delta fills.

Waterways & Lagoons

Meandering channels and quiet lagoons — the artery system of the Okavango.

Pools, Pans & Wetlands

Clear pools and shallow pans that hold life long after the rains have passed.

Grasslands & Mopane

Open grassland and mopane forest — classic grazing and browsing country.

Wildlife & Birding

An exceptional variety of life

This mosaic of ecosystems supports lions, leopards and wild dogs alongside massive herds of elephants and buffalo — and every major herbivore of the region.

With over 400 bird species — including rare migratory and endangered birds — Moremi is one of the Delta's most rewarding destinations for birdwatchers.
